There are few places like this that have been so beautifully designed as a complex. The facility and its setting in the valley, the balance of the retreat dwellers and the monastic hosts, and the vast, quiet interstitial spaces all combine to facilitate an encounter with the holy…whatever that may look like to you.

The closure of the monastery is a loss for the bretheren who live there and their order, for Snowmass, and for Colorado, and for everyone who values man-made, sacred spaces. I am blessed and count myself lucky to have been there on retreat.

Heaven on Earth - several square miles of pristine meadows and forest at the base of Mount Sopris - and at the center the Benedictine Monastery and Retreat - a place of deep contemplation and holiness. The retreat facilities are top notch, and the Sanctuary and Monastery library are incredible.

I was fortunate enough to have attended the interfaith retreats here two years in a row, and experienced the presence of Father Thomas Keating and many other eminent lights of the various traditions. The setting is incredible - a few hay meadows are the only development and nature still blazes forth unblemished. It is the ideal place for retreat and contemplation.

We have been so incredibly blessed to have been privileged enough to spend once a week for many years in the rhythm of the Monks. May God bless each of them in their new place they find home and may God protect the land, buildings, cemetery and property to entrust it to a grace filled hand desiring to keep it a prayerfilled, preserved and prayerful valley and space. +++

Had family visiting this past weekend visiting the local area, stopped here on the way to Aspen. The door to the chapel area from the store was unlock assuming we aloud to walk around. Apparently while using the restroom someone told my brother in law we were not aloud in the chapel. This was very disappointing. Thought God’s door was open to everyone. We would understood if the monks were in prayer or their was some type of service going on. If you don’t want people walking around then the door should had been locked. And yet the door to the store was opened no problem being there, typical. Was going to buy some jam decided not too, if not aloud into God’s house then you don’t get my money.

My wife and I celebrated Mass at the monastery this morning after a friend told us about it recently. A beautiful facility in a simply magnificent setting. What a privilege it was to visit this place and enjoy Mass with the monks. We hope to return to this sacred, serene place again soon!

Quite simply, one of the most beautiful and sacred places on earth. I have taken two individual retreats here and have been met with nothing but kindness from the monks and support staff. A little off the beaten path but worth the effort if you are in need of a spiritual retreat.
